Christian Appalachian Project -
Camp Andrew Jackson, a summer camp and educational center, in Jackson County, Kentucky invites local teens to a week of experiencing the outdoors in adventure based activities. Camp Andrew Jackson is a program of the Christian Appalachian Project, a non-profit, inter-denominational service organization, which seeks to help the people of Appalachia help themselves, through education, crisis intervention and community development.

Campers are in a constant state of motion throughout the busy week of camp. In one activity designed to build teamwork, the campers, armed with paddles, canoe out into the middle of the lake, then capsize, they proceed to work as a team to get themselves and their watercraft back to the dock safe and sound.

Campers come for five days to learn new skills, to make new friends, and to experience the beauty of the outdoors. Teen leadership camp is specially designed to empower campers to understand and feel good about who they are and who they want to be. Activities include: hiking, climbing, camping out, swimming, paddle boating, sports, canoeing, bible study, arts & crafts, group building, campfires, singing, values building and much more.

In addition to learning about themselves, a community service project has been included within the week of events. The teens travel in small groups to a local retirement home and visit with the senior citizens residing there. They interact, collect stories from the past, participate in crafts and most importantly acquaint themselves with a part of the population that is sometimes forgotten.

“The community service project enables the teens to learn a valuable basic lesson in leadership, in giving back to the community,” stated Katie Hancock, coordinator of Camp A.J.
Camp Andrew Jackson is accepting summer camp applications for the following weeks, July 9-13, July 16-20, 23-27 and July 30-August 3. Summer camp is available to children and youth throughout southeastern Kentucky.
